About Channdeep Nagi

Channdeep Singh is a criminal defence lawyer at Aitken Robertson with nearly five years of experience representing clients across Ontario. Called to the Bar in January 2021, he has built a practice with a significant focus on impaired driving defence, handling an estimated 100 DUI-related cases and conducting approximately 25 DUI trials to date. His work spans a range of drinking and driving matters, from “80 and over” charges and refusal allegations to cases involving complex Charter litigation. Channdeep’s trial record includes notable outcomes achieved through meticulous cross-examination and strategic Charter arguments. In one Oshawa case, he successfully advanced a breach of privacy claim after an arresting officer stood within view of his client while the client was using the toilet in a cell. In another Toronto matter, he persuaded the court to exclude all breath evidence after demonstrating that the arresting officer lacked reasonable suspicion, despite a motor vehicle collision, and had relied on unsupported indicia. His approach to DUI defence begins with a detailed client interview and a thorough review of disclosure, identifying both Charter breaches and trial-proper issues. From there, he develops a clear case theory, engages the Crown in resolution discussions—often seeking a reduction to careless driving—and, when necessary, proceeds to trial with a focused and disciplined strategy. Channdeep values the Charter-intensive nature of impaired driving cases, particularly the opportunity to challenge unreasonable police conduct through cross-examination. In addition to his client work, Channdeep contributes to the profession through blogs on DUI law published on both the firm’s website and his own platforms, articles shared on LinkedIn, and presentations at Aitken Robertson’s annual CPD training seminars. He also provides informal mentorship to junior lawyers seeking guidance on impaired driving defence. Fluent in Punjabi and Hindi, and conversational in Urdu, Channdeep ensures his clients fully understand the legal process and their options, regardless of language or background. A member of the Criminal Lawyers’ Association, he is committed to advancing his skills through specialized DUI CPDs and to staying at the forefront of developments in this challenging area of criminal law.

By Ryan Katz It is no secret that Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is vastly changing the landscape of many different fields. Generative AI can help lawyers brainstorm arguments, organize...

Oral Fluid Testing: Roadside vs. Evidential Analyses

09/02/2025

Written by Ashley M. Hart As cannabis is being decriminalized in many states, there has been increased interest in rapid roadside tests to detect THC and other substances for intoxicated driving charges. A majority of states now have oral fluid testing in some form: roadside (presumptive) or evidential (confirmed in a lab). These states include Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Connecticut,...
