About Steven Scharboneau
Attorney Steven Scharboneau primarily focuses in the areas of criminal defense, legislative advocacy, and appellate advocacy. He is extremely passionate about protecting the rights of others and achieves this by advocating for his clients directly in the courtroom and indirectly at the legislative level as a lobbyist. Steven graduated cum laude from the University of Arizona earning a bachelor’s degree in political science with an emphasis in law and public policy. He then earned his Juris Doctorate degree from ASU Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law and is licensed to practice law in Arizona and in U.S. District Court in the District of Arizona. Steven works with Arizona’s top criminal justice reform leaders in an effort to transform Arizona’s penal system. He regularly spends time at the Arizona State Capitol meeting with elected officials, community leaders and special interest groups and frequently testifies in Arizona House and Senate committees. He is regularly quoted and interviewed by the media for his expertise on criminal law and justice issues in Arizona and has spoken at a number of private and public speaking engagements. His writings on topics of the law and politics are often published as guest commentary in news media outlets. During his legal career, Steven has achieved a myriad of victories for his clients including several appellate wins. He is also responsible for drafting and ushering successful legislation such as Arizona’s law prohibiting for-profit commercial mugshot companies and Title 28 (Vehicular Code) reform legislation—both of which were signed into law by Arizona’s Governor. Steven has had a hand in groundbreaking criminal justice reform legislation including expungement legislation, criminal sentencing reform and the elimination of license suspensions for unpaid fines. In 2020, he received a Presidential Commendation from the Arizona Attorneys for Criminal Justice in recognition of his dedicated work at the legislature to improve the lives of Arizonans fighting for a second chance. When not working, Steven enjoys spending time with his family and enjoying the outdoors. Steven often volunteers in his community and sits on the board of two non-profit organizations.

Written by Michelle L. Behan Amicus Curiae (Latin for "Friend of the Court") refers to a brief that is filed by an interested, non-party to the matter under consideration. This is often done in cases where organizations and entities wish to provide the reviewing court with their point of view, be it social or public policy implications, or special interest agendas....
Keeping FSTs Out of a Trial
04/23/2025
Written by Neil Halttunen I want to address a common issue that DWI practitioners are facing, trying to keep FSTs out of a trial.
