About Phil Stiles
Philip Stiles is a DUI and criminal defence lawyer with Aitken Robertson, bringing a unique perspective to every case from his previous experience as a Crown Attorney. Called to the Bar in Ontario in 2013 and in Alberta in 2015, Philip’s dual background in prosecution and defence enables him to anticipate Crown strategies and craft strong, proactive legal responses for his clients. Philip earned his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Trent University in 2007, followed by his LL.B. from the University of Windsor in 2011. In 2018, he completed his Master of Laws in Constitutional Law from Osgoode Hall, deepening his knowledge of Charter rights—often a decisive factor in impaired driving defence. His legal career began with a two-year contract with Alberta Justice and Solicitor General, where he acted as lead counsel in complex criminal cases involving expert testimony and detailed evidentiary analysis. This early exposure to high-level litigation refined his courtroom skills and provided him with first-hand knowledge of Crown protocol and evidentiary requirements. Philip has appeared at various levels of court across Ontario, defending charges ranging from impaired and dangerous driving to obstruction of justice. His work has included cases involving dangerous driving causing death and other serious criminal allegations. He is known for his methodical preparation, attention to procedural detail, and commitment to ensuring clients fully understand the legal process from the outset. Whether working toward an early resolution or preparing for trial, he focuses on crafting strong, proactive, defences for clients and securing the best possible result in each case. Based primarily in Oshawa, Philip also represents clients in the firm’s Lindsay and Peterborough offices. He is a member of the Durham Law Association, the Ontario Bar Association, and the Criminal Lawyers’ Association. As a member of the National College for DUI Defense, Philip remains engaged with evolving defence strategies and developments in forensic science to continually strengthen his advocacy for clients facing DUI charges.

Written by Ashley M. Hart As cannabis is being decriminalized in many states, there has been increased interest in rapid roadside tests to detect THC and other substances for intoxicated driving charges.
