About Michael D. Barber, Jr

After completing law school and passing the bar I received a lot of experience first hand as a defense attorney. During that time I obtained my Standardized Field Sobriety training and my Advanced Roadside impaired driving enforcement training from the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration. After spending 3 years fighting for people’s rights I thought that I should learn how the other side works their cases so that I could better prepare as a defense attorney. At that point, I spent the next 3 years with the City of Atlanta Solicitor’s/Prosecutor office in the special DUI Courtroom where I prosecuted DUI and Drug offenses. As a prosecutor I learned how the other side prepares for prosecuting their cases. This is extremely helpful and useful for my clients as I have the ability to interpret what the other side is considering and thinking in regards to my clients case. After excelling in the courtroom, I trained at the Georgia Public Safety and Training Center (GPSTC). By training at this location I was able to learn exactly what both the police and State Troopers learn to make their DUI cases. In fact, the Georgia Public Safety and Training Center is where State Troopers receive ther training and where all police officers supplement their training. While training there at the police training ground I received certifications in DUI Field Sobriety Testing, and various other programs for speeding, accident and basic moving violations. After completing this training, I was invited by other county prosecutors to be a guest instructor for a DUI courses at both the Georgia Public Safety and Training Center and county locations. I also had the oppotunity to design and teach a class at the Atlanta Police Department Training Center. I also assisted in redesigning the current DUI court system with the City of Atlanta Municipal Court. Now my time is spent using my knowledge gained in defending the innocent in court against wrongful prosecution. 2014 Summer Session Graduate

Written by Jonathan Dichter The Heart of Client Care: Moving Beyond Case Management In the legal profession, we often talk about "case management" - the systems and processes that keep our cases moving efficiently. But what about *client care*? True client care goes beyond deadlines and filings; it's about treating clients as *people*-scared, uncertain, and in need of guidance. And when done...

Personal Contact: Using the Officer's Observations Against Them

03/10/2025

Written by Charles GoodwinEdited by Michelle Behan and Steven Hernandez The typical DUI investigation has three phases. It begins with the vehicle in motion and focuses on driving patterns that officers are trained might indicate impairment. Next is personal contact, where the officer will observe physical manifestations that are also purportedly correlated with alcohol ingestion and impairment. Finally, the officer will...
