About J. Michael Mullis

I have retired and am no longer accepting cases. J. Michael Mullis lived most of his life in Valdosta, Lowndes County, Georgia where he owned and operated a bookstore prior to law school. He graduated with honors with a BA degree in history from Valdosta State University in 1987, scored in the 95th percentile on the Law School Admission Test, and received a scholarship to the University of Georgia School of Law in Athens. During his last year in law school, Mr. Mullis participated in the Defender Clinic at the School of Law Legal Aid and Defender Society. After graduating from Law School, Mr. Mullis worked as a staff attorney at the UGA Legal Aid Office where he successfully defended many high profile cases including murder, rape, aggravated assault, and felony drug cases. While in Athens, he also defended DUI cases. In 1992, Mr. Mullis moved home to Valdosta where he continued criminal defense. At the beginning of 1994, Mr. Mullis received a call from William C. Bubba Head of Atlanta. Mr. Head literally wrote the book on DUI defense in Georgia and is one of the foremost authorities on the subject in the nation. Mr. Head asked Mr. Mullis to move to Atlanta to help him with his expanding DUI practice. After attending several advanced DUI training courses sponsored by Mr. Head, Mr. Mullis began his specialization in DUI cases. In 1995, the law firm of Head, Mullis, Thomas & Webb was formed with the express purpose of defending DUI cases. The firm consisted of the largest assemblage of attorneys in the nation dedicated to DUI defense. After five years, Mr. Mullis opened his own practice and quickly became known as the go-to-guy for DUI defense (DUI GUY for short). Mr. Mullis defends those charged with DUI, homicide by vehicle, and other alcohol related offenses. Mr. Mullis has defended or consulted on hundreds of DUI cases and has received advanced training on scientific evidence and DUI detection (Standardized Field Sobriety Testing). In 2004 he received a Certificate of Compleation for the Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) course. He is a founding member of the National College for DUI Defense, and has spoken at seminars for private attorneys and judges. Members of the Georgia Defense of Drinking Drivers group deemed the DUI Guy website worthy to receive an Award of Merit. Mr. Mullis limits his practice to criminal cases with heavy emphasis on alcohol related traffic cases.
