About William Conwell
I maintain a private criminal law practice. Currently, I represent people primarily in Lake and Mendocino Counties. I have completed approximately 50 jury trials (felony and misdemeanor trials) in Colusa County, Humboldt County, Lake County, Mendocino County, and Napa County. Argued numerous preliminary hearings, 1000.3 hearings, 1210.1 hearings, suppression hearings, motion to strike prior convictions, speedy trial motions, 995 motions, Pitchess motions, writs of mandamus and prohibitum, habeas corpus petitions, and misdemeanor appeals. In writ proceedings, I successfully argued a prior misdemeanor conviction was unconstitutional and that resulted in the allegation being dismissed. This relieved the client of his duty to register as a sex offender. I have handled many felony cases of all levels of difficulty and I am very well versed in the strike laws as well as how out of state strikes can be challenged when the prosecution tries to apply them to a California felony. Additionally, I help many people clean their record of prior convictions. Many marijuana felonies are now reducible to misdemeanor as well as many felony simple drug possession charges. Since 2015, California has greatly expanded a person's ability to clean their criminal history. Most recently, California has instituted a process for some to remove themselves from sexual registration per PC 290. I have successfully defended numerous misdemeanor DUI appeals. Assist other fellow misdemeanor and felony attorneys with legal research regularly. I am a listed Contributor to California Drunk Driving Law, James Publishing, by Paul Burglin, Barry Simons, and Ed Kuwatch

AI in Court Filings: The Ethics Line Between Assistance and Abdication
03/30/2026
By Ryan Katz It is no secret that Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is vastly changing the landscape of many different fields. Oral Fluid Testing: Roadside vs. Evidential Analyses
09/02/2025
Written by Ashley M. Hart As cannabis is being decriminalized in many states, there has been increased interest in rapid roadside tests to detect THC and other substances for intoxicated driving charges.
